What project & pmo managers need to know about quality (a practitioner's beyond the text books perspective)
What project managers need to know about quality is a subtle blend of roles, procedures, tools and "what to watch-out-for" but it's not what the PMBoK-G and PRINCE2 etc manuals include. Their authors got distracted to tell us about product quality and statistical control. That's just a 1/3 of the need to MANAGE others actually doing quality, and not the most important third!
What we need to know is how to set-up and administer a quality ethos. Even the statistical process control and run-charts stuff is operations not project! Our teams need the emphasis on how to combine tools to solve project challenges. We need our quality activities to link to progress recognition, to procedural links for configuration management and release procedures that enable clear discharge of responsibilities.
We need a lot less (yawn) PDCA, Pareto, Histograms or fish-bone diagrams. WE do usefully want the JOURNEY through the tool chains so we know how our teams should be using the tools in combination.
